Son of Thanjai is an open-world action-adventure game set in the Chola Empire of ancient South India, developed by Ayelet Studios, a Chennai-based independent studio. The game is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PS5.
The story follows Vinnendiran, a Chola prince who has spent his entire life inside palace walls. When his father is dying, enemies are closing in, and the kingdom is on the edge of collapse, the king makes an impossible decision and sends his son into the world as a nameless commoner. What follows is a journey through a living, breathing ancient Tamil world, where the prince must earn the trust of farmers, traders, rebels, and ordinary people before he can ever hope to rule them.

The story, screenplay, dialogues and songs for Son of Thanjai are written by Dr. Madhan Karky, one of the most celebrated writers in Tamil cinema. With credits on over 400 films and more than 1000 songs, including blockbusters like Endhiran and Bahubali, Dr. Karky brings a rare depth of cultural knowledge and storytelling craft to the project. Son of Thanjai marks his first foray into the world of gaming.

At the heart of the gameplay is the Surul Vaal, a flexible whip sword drawn from real South Indian martial history and never before featured in a major game. The combat system is built on Kalaripayattu, widely regarded as one of the oldest martial arts in the world, giving the game a fighting style that is both historically grounded and unlike anything seen in gaming today.

Son of Thanjai will be released in Tamil with English subtitles. This is a deliberate and significant choice. For the first time, players around the world will experience a major game spoken entirely in Tamil, exploring the language, culture and landscape of ancient South India from within.
